Ramayana
The Ramayana is an Indian epic about a prince named Rama. Rama had 3 brothers; Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrungana. Their father, King Dasaratha had 3 wives; Kausalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyi. Rama was the son of Kausalya, Bharata, the son of Kaikeyi and Lakshmana and Shatrungana were the sons of Sumitra. Rama was the oldest and the heir to the throne of Ayodhya, the city where he was from and was loved by all the citizens. The only person who hated Rama was the servant of Kaikeyi, Manthara. Rama had been persuaded by his friends to throw a pebble at Manthara’s pot which angered her. When it was time for Ram to be crowned Yuvaraj or Prince Manthara poisoned Kaikeyi’s mind to make her use two boons from Dasharatha that she received earlier. One was to make her son prince instead of Rama and two was to send Ram to exile for 14 years. Ram agreed and went with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana. While in exile, a ten-headed demon named Ravana kidnapped Sita. Rama made friends with Sugreeva, the monkey king of Kishkinda and his friend Hanuman and they promised him with their army they would help Rama to find Sita. They looked everywhere till they got to the ocean. As they pondered what to do a vulture named Sampati told them that Ravana had taken Sita to Lanka where he ruled. Only Hanuman could find her and jump across the ocean only because he had so much faith and devotion in Rama. After seeing Sita and burning most of Lanka except the garden where Sita was kept captive, Hanuman came back to Rama. Then Rama and his brother and the monkeys built a bridge and crossed the ocean. When they left, they were accompanied by Vibeeshna, Ravana’s brother who didn’t agree with Ravana’s evil ways. After a long war, Rama won and went back to Ayodhya to be king because Bharata would not take the throne, even though Rama would let him. Everyone was happy to see Rama back.
